It was one night this spring, that our outreach worker Maria found Susan and Kyle. At first, they seemed tough and aloof, but Maria sensed that was protective armour.
Many of our kids have never heard the words “I’m proud of you,” or “way to go” or had a pat on the back. But Karen McGavin, Covenant House community support services manager, is changing that with a simple wall in her office that has quickly become the “fridge door” for many youth.
“We wanted to reach out to kids where they are,” says Shannon Wright, the nurse who heads up our main health care clinic.
