7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Holidays and Sundays
With additional hours of work as needed

As Canada’s largest agency serving at-risk, homeless and trafficked youth, Covenant House Toronto changes lives by providing the widest range of services and support to as many as 250 youth a day. A national leader, we educate and advocate for change by influencing public policy and delivering prevention and awareness programs. More than a place to stay, we provide 24/7 crisis shelter and transitional housing on-site and in the community, along with comprehensive services including education, counselling, health care, employment assistance, job training and aftercare. To do all this, we rely on donors for more than 80 percent of our $27-million annual operating budget. Our doors are open to youth 16 to 24 regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or the circumstances that have brought them to our doors. Since opening our doors in 1982, Covenant House has served more than 95,000 young people.
The Cook will be directly responsible for production/preparation of all menu items to include seasoning, marinating and cooking of salads, soups, fish, meats, vegetables, desserts or other foods as instructed by the Operations manager. Plan and schedule production for menu items, assist in ordering supplies, and keep records and accounts as necessary according to standard policy and procedures of the organization. The position will supervise, direct and train personnel and youth training in the food production kitchen in order quantity and quality standards are maintained according to the departments’ goals and objectives. Supervises and participates in cooking, baking and the preparation of foods. Reports to the Foodservice Coordinator needs for weekly production according to business and projected goals for food cost budgets. They must participate with Receiver/Purchaser in checking of all purchased supplies for quality and account for each delivered item.

Qualifications:
• Minimum 2-5 years’ experience in the hospitality/customer service industry.
• Successful completion/enrollment in a recognized Culinary Training Program or Ministry Apprenticeship program
• Current Food Handlers Safety Certificate – in house training available
• Ability to prioritize and read orders, menus, standard recipes and task sheets,
plan, prepare and execute meals within set deadlines with attention to standards of wholesomeness, quality and quantity as instructed.
• Ability to plan and organize logical work sequences within time constraints
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs repetitively, to bend, reach and stoop
• Ability to adapt to performing miscellaneous jobs-related duties or assist other departments if required
• Ability to work in hot, wet, humid and loud environments for extended periods of time.
• Supervisory skills to provide guidance, training, direction and to coordinate, assign, schedule, check and supervise the work of staff in food production
