Mental Health

After carefully examining their needs, each youth with mental health issues receives extensive personalized care from our health care team, including regular appointments with our psychiatrists. We manage the dispensing of medication for each kid. While we ensure our kids receive the medication they require, counselling is always a part of treatment. We estimate that 35% of our youth have mental health issues.

Since some of our youth are not ready to attend school or find work, we have a day program for kids with mental health issues called Arts and Minds to support their special and complex needs. To help youth improve their social skills and build their confidence, the program offers activities like arts, crafts, recreation, cooking lessons and volunteering in the community. The program is offered to both residential and non-residential youth.

Youthdale, a children’s mental health service, operates here at Covenant House in their own dedicated spaces. It provides treatment as well as activities and educational opportunities both to residents and the community.

We are partnering with Ryerson University on a study to provide relief for youth experiencing serious anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder through Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, a relatively new technique to help youth learn and practice innovative coping strategies. The positive changes we have seen in some of our youth participating in this study have been profound. We are constantly striving to adapt our services for our youth with mental health challenges to achieve solace and independence.

We have noticed a marked increase in youth with mental health issues in the last decade. We believe this is in part because there are now far fewer community resources to meet the need.
