volunteer

Covenant House relies on a multitude of volunteers from all kinds of backgrounds every year. These volunteers have life enriching experiences knowing that they are making a tangible difference in the lives of homeless youth.

Our volunteers support us with diverse jobs that range from computer networking and database entry to helping us ask for change at our annual transit coin drive. Our volunteer support means we can utilize our paid resources where it benefits us the most. Whether you are stuffing envelopes or building a contact list, we are all part of the same effort that achieves amazing outcomes for youth.

Please fill out our online volunteer application. Please note, due to the volume of applications we receive, only those with skills that we are currently seeking will be contacted.

Working with the kids

Covenant House receives hundreds of applications to volunteer every year. Unfortunately, we receive more applications than jobs available. However, we often have volunteers with valuable skill sets host life-skills workshops, mentor youth and teach unique job skills to our kids. These volunteers have specific expertise that can benefit the youth.

We are not seeking people to formally counsel our youth. Our youth are often struggling with complex issues, so their counselling is provided by our dedicated staff of highly trained professionals.

The approval process for working with the youth can be long. Volunteers not only need a skill to offer, but must have availability during the times that works with the schedules of our youth. To ensure the safety of our youth, every volunteer needs to have a police check, which may include finger printing, before coming into contact with our youth. You also must provide two personal references. Finally, all volunteers must complete a four-part online training module that prepares you for working with the youth.

Please ensure you can dedicate the time before beginning the process as our volunteer services team reviews every application very carefully and takes the time to interview each and every appropriate applicant.

Your skills can add so much to the experiences of our kids. If you have a unique skill and want to help, fill out our online volunteer application.

Mentorship

Our mentors provide positive adult role modeling and guidance to our youth on school, careers and life. Mentors are paired with youth based on compatibility and need. These carefully screened individuals will make a commitment for one year to mentor one youth at a time. When the youth moves out, they may ask to be assigned a new youth. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please fill out our mentorship application.

Fundraising Champions and Social Networkers

We value community leaders, social media "influencers" and senior professionals who use their leadership to help our youth.

We are grateful to individuals who champion us to those that could make a corporate or leadership gift. Your role could be as simple as asking your connections if it is alright for someone from Covenant House to contact them.  There may also be opportunities to join committees and sub-committees to the Board.

If you are willing to help us make some valuable connections, contact:

If you have a large and influential social media following, we need your help! Ask your followers to follow us on social networks and to join our email list. Share and retweet our posts to your followers. If you run a blog, contact us and let us know about it! We have a network of bloggers who support us by posting about our events, running our online banners, and including us in their email newsletters.

Not only does it greatly help us when individuals with large online followings take up our cause and help spread our message, helping us make connections with key individuals is vital to our cause.
