Grounds Keeper
3 Months Contract May 2019 to August 2019
Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

As Canada’s largest agency serving at-risk, homeless and trafficked youth, Covenant House Toronto changes lives by providing the widest range of services and support to as many as 300 youth a day. A national leader, we educate and advocate for change by influencing public policy and delivering prevention and awareness programs. More than a place to stay, we provide 24/7 crisis shelter and transitional housing on-site and in the community, along with comprehensive services including education, counselling, health care, employment assistance, job training and after-care. To do all this, we rely on donors for more than 80 per cent of our $30.6-million annual operating budget. Our doors are open to youth 16 to 24 regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or the circumstances that have brought them to our doors. Since opening our doors in 1982, Covenant House has served more than 95,000 young people.

The incumbent will be responsible for:

• Removing weeds in roof top garden, patio areas and other areas as requested
• Disposing of garbage /weeds in garbage rooms
• Transplanting flowers and plants as instructed
• Preparing soil by installing manure and other prep soils as delivered
• Thinning out plants as needed
• Watering plants as needed
• Harvesting and delivering products as needed from the gardens
• Keeping the gardens clean, weed free and bountiful (irrigated properly as instructed)
• Cleaning and organizing storage areas
• Cleaning inside of windows, light fixtures, blinds, hardwood floors and hallway runners
• Cleaning and maintaining exterior of facility (maintaining any green and deck areas)
• Performing other maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned
• Other gardening work and duties as instructed
• Assist caretakers and maintenance staff as needed

Job Requirements:

• Grade 12 preferred
• Ability to communicate well and take directions
• Must be willing to work outside in hot sunny conditions and wet conditions
• Experience in grounds keeping/gardening is preferred
• Some local travel may be required
